Following this interview with ABC's Charles Gibson — which arguably constitutes Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's first test as to whether she has a clue about issues of actual significance — the McCain camp will no doubt be scrambling to refocus attention on pigs wearing lipstick and similarly irrelevant headlines that distract not only from constructive discourse on critical matters, but also the reality that this campaign ticket has little to offer on those matters.
Sitting across from Gibson, Palin comes across in this video as a nervous high school student unprepared for her first job interview. Three moments that were, in my view, particularly telling:
- When Gibson pressed Palin on how her state's proximity to Russia lends insight into the actions of that nation, Palin responded that "they're our next-door neighbors, and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska." (Likewise, from parts of Washington state, one can see into Canada. I feel so empowered now.)
- When asked whether she had ever met a foreign head of state, Palin said she had not but that the desire in this nation was for "no more politics as usual and somebody's big, fat resume that shows decades and decades in that Washington establishment" that would afford such an opportunity. (Right, and certainly her running mate has not campaigned on his resume.)
- When Gibson asked Palin whether she agreed with the Bush doctrine, he ultimately ended up having to explain to her what it was. (Cut to the moment where she responds to his question by asking, "In what respect, Charlie?" Perhaps Sarah Palin rather than Frances McDormand should have been cast for the star role in the 1996 dark comedy, "Fargo.")

Look, can Barack Obama see Russia from Illinois? Could he see it from Hawaii or Indonesia or that Muslim school he graduated from? Can Joe Biden see Russia from that train he rides home every night because he's too much of sissy to ride a Harley? No, no and No!
Palin/McCain '08!
I loved this video so much I had to post it on my blog too! I've never seen someone be so embarrasslingly evasive and so clearly unable to give a straight answer. She's just digging her own grave - hallelujah!
I'm glad that she doesn't blink much. You wouldn't want a vice-president who spent too much time blinking.
Wow, nice job on trying to dodge the National Security question, "Well, I don't have much to say about my experience with international relations (because I have none - though Mexico is really sunny), but I have a canned answer on oil".
"There is a very small percentage of Islamic believers who are extreme and they are violent and they do not believe in American ideals... They are hell-bent on destroying this country". Replace Islamic with Christian and replace American with Universal and read again for an interesting projective statement.
"We are a free thinking society"... but we shouldn't allow children to read books in the library that I don't like.
She did look rusty and Gibson seemed tough on her. To give her the benefit of the doubt, she's been reading speeches for the past two weeks. It's hard to make the transition over to thinking for yourself. I'm actually pretty confident that she'll get a lot better at interviews after a couple of weeks. For McCain's sake, she better, because there isn't much more time before the election and those debates between her an Biden could be devastating for her.
She just seems way out of her league and inconsistent in her answers. Palin comments on how we should start seeing war as last option, yet at same time supports any course of action Israel(yes even it involves violence against other people).
This was simply painful to watch. I've never seen anyone so unprepared for an interview. If she would have just had a straight answer for at least one question!
